Croutons are basically toast. It’s really shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s cooked, crunchy bread.
This recipe for making homemade croutons only uses three ingredients and takes about fifteen minutes.
Crouton Ingredients
Croutons are made of bread. But because it’s going to be toasted, you can get away with using bread that has started to go stale.
It’s better than wasting it right? Especially if it’s homemade bread.
You will also need a bunch of butter and some garlic salt.
How to Make Croutons
Before you start anything, begin preheating your oven to 350 degrees.
Melt your butter in the microwave. Don’t overdo it. Microwave your butter in ten to fifteen second increments so you don’t burn it.
Remove the crusts from your bread.
Brush the bread on both sides with melted butter, and cut it into crouton shaped cubes.
Sprinkle the bread with garlic salt.
Now, place the cubes on an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees for about fifteen minutes.
Crouton Making Tips
If you like your croutons super crunchy, bake a little longer. Not super crunchy, bake a little less.
You can store croutons for a while if you put them in a covered container or a sealed bag. Feel free to make a lot at a time.
Do not refrigerate.
Make sure you have some ready when making a caesar salad. Homemade croutons are the only way to go.
